Lanarkshire Y1 Project
Frontline staff take responsibility for raising standards of dignity on their wards
The Link Nurses within the Older People’s Directorate, NHS Lanarkshire, identified that a DVD resource would enable them to raise awareness and understanding of the issues around ‘caring with dignity’ with their teams and colleagues. They devised the story and wrote a series of scenes to describe these issues.
Through the DVD, evidence-based practice around dignity can be explored using local examples and understanding of the culture. For example, the Healthcare Commission ‘Caring for Dignity’ (2007) identifies a number of key themes as essential elements for ensuring that older people are cared for in ways that respect their dignity.
These are:
- Involving older people in their care
- Delivering personal care in a way that ensures dignity for the patient
- Having a workforce that is equipped to deliver good quality care
- Strong leadership at all levels
- Supportive ward environment.
Fundamental to all these points is that the staff delivering care understand (and agree) what ‘caring with dignity’ requires of them in terms of the attitudes they display and the way they behave with colleagues and older people (patients and family members) on the ward.
This DVD resource is designed to enable staff at ward level to take ownership of the process by which standards are agreed and maintained.
In short it will:
- raise awareness among staff of the experience of older people as patients
- engage staff as a community in discussions around ‘care with dignity’ and the values base that should underpin such care (and also considering ‘how we do things around here’)
- identify local solutions which will raise - and maintain - standards of care.
- be a useful tool for new staff
The next step is for the link nurses to use this resource and evaluate its impact.
